The Bastion

The bells of the Chiesa del Carmelo rang themselves that night. A little after three fifteen,, the wind whipping spray off the heaving sea, gusting squalls of rain across the piazza in angled sheets.
He heard another sound then, a low rumble beneath the thrall of the ocean, felt the cobbles shifting beneath his feet, The Torre de San Giacomo was rising, pulling itself from the churning ocean, the battlements climbing high above the sea wall, dwarfing the church and the rain slicked street, its barnacled walls wreathed in bladderwrack. Somewhere down its length stone softened, to cheekbones, he could make out the ragged cave of a nose and beneath that, the thin line of a mouth,, It turned towards him then as if it sensed his shadow hiding beneath the gates of the church,. He felt its words rather than heard them,..
“I am Senori Bastioni” it said by way of introduction “why have you called me.?”
